About
The Pharmacy Practice Seminar (PPS) equips community pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with practical and relevant tools and knowledge that can immediately be applied in practice to see the positive effects of patient care. This event was held the evening of Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24. The full program was recorded, produced, and now available fully on-demand consisting of videos of each presentation.

Target Audience
This seminar is intended for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in community pharmacies.

Sharon Rush received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree in 1986. She practiced as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, Central Texas Immunization Coordinator, and PGY-1 residency preceptor during her 23 years with a large community pharmacy chain. She joined the faculty of the Division of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in July 2010. She is the Community Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator for the college and the Austin/Temple/Waco Community Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator for the fourth-year professional students. Professor Rush has been involved with direct patient care programs for many years, such as pharmacy-based immunizations, health screenings, Medication Therapy Management, and Disease State Management. She is a certified instructor for the APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate program for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the APhA Medication Therapy Management certificate program, and the NACDS Point of Care certificate program. All Pharm.D. students at UT earn their immunization and medication therapy management certificates under her instruction.  She provides the annual 3-hour continuing education Immunization Update for the Texas Pharmacy Association and The University of Texas College of Pharmacy Pharmacy Practice Seminar.

Jessica Haskins is an experienced pharmacist who has lived in Austin, Texas for 20 years. With a deep passion for healthcare and patient well-being, Jessica has dedicated her career to exploring a variety of areas of pharmacy and patient care. She obtained her Pharm.D. from The University of Louisiana at Monroe, her residency in Community Care through The University of Texas at Austin, and her Six Sigma Black Belt degree through Southern New Hampshire University. Jessica has been in retail pharmacy management, Specialty pharmacy, and pharmacy education for 18 years, and recently as a director in a national telemedicine company. Jessica currently practices retail pharmacy in Austin at Peoples Pharmacy.
 
Outside of professional pursuits, Jessica enjoys cooking and playing drums. She lives in South Austin with her 8-year-old son, and they attend many of the wonderful music events Austin has to offer. She enjoys applying the creative process required in cooking and music to healthcare operations to innovate ways to provide excellent patient care.

Dr. Ashley Garling graduated Rho Chi with honors from the MCV/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy. Her career path went from community pharmacy management, inpatient pharmacy with an oncology focus, to corporate clinical coordinator, and media spokeswoman. She is now a clinical assistant professor at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy where she serves as a communication, media, and patient engagement specialist. Dr. Garling is the principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI for research projects in community pharmacy settings spanning telehealth, HIV PrEP, mental health, patient counseling, and medication adherence.  She currently serves as president of the Capital Area Pharmacist Association, Affairs Public Policy Council Member, and Public Policy Council Member of the Texas Pharmacist Association.  Her career pillars are focused on public activation, empowerment of underheard voices, and health education. In 2020-21, Dr. Garling was awarded the Dr. Carolyn Brown DEAI Champion Award and the 2021 Teaching Excellency Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to diversity, inclusion, and pharmacy education.

Lucas G. Hill graduated from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Pharmacy and completed a combined family medicine residency and faculty development fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is now a clinical associate professor at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy where he serves as director of the Pharmacy Addictions Research and Medicine (PhARM) Program and holds the Bergen Brunswig Corporation Centennial Fellowship. Dr. Hill is the principal investigator for a Texas Targeted Opioid Response project which seeks to address the opioid crisis in Texas by educating health professionals and conducting pragmatic research. He is an editorial board member for the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and a past chair of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Substance Use Disorder Special Interest Group. Dr. Hill has been recognized with several prestigious national awards, including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy New Educator Award and the American Pharmacists Association Generation Rx Award of Excellence.

Terry Weaver is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Pharmacy Practice. Terry earned his B.S. in pharmacy from the College of Pharmacy in 1997 and has served the university for more than 15 years; first as a staff pharmacist and most recently as pharmacist-in-charge at the Forty Acres Pharmacy. Julie Spier of Katy was appointed to the board in 2018 and has served as President of the Board since 2019. She is also the Director of Pharmacy Operations for the Southern division of Albertsons, Randalls, and Tom Thumb, overseeing 142 locations in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Through the years with Randalls, she has served in the capacity of a pharmacist, pharmacy manager, regional pharmacy manager, and patient care services pharmacy manager in addition to her current title. Ms. Spier received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Sam Houston State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy.

Laurajo Ryan, Pharm.D., MSc, BCPS, CDE is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Pharmacotherapy Division at the University of Texas College of Pharmacy and at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio in the Department of Medicine and the Pharmacotherapy Education Research Center. She teaches extensively in the College of Pharmacy as well as the School of Medicine. She also serves as a scientific reviewer for an investigational review board (IRB). She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas and completed a 2-year specialty residency at the University of Maryland. She received her Master’s degree in Clinical Investigation from the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio.  Her primary clinical practice is in the inpatient medicine service at University Hospital where she supervises Pharm.D. interns and residents in acute care medicine. She also sees patients in the South Texas VA therapeutic drug management clinic. Her academic responsibilities include didactic teaching of Pharm.D. students, Master’s students, Ph.D. students and residents.

Dr. Saklad is a Clinical Professor at The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and a Pharmacist at San Antonio State Hospital since 1979. He has focused his career on clinical care, teaching, and research to improve the quality of life and function in the serious and persistently mentally ill. He helped to create a clinical research unit at San Antonio State Hospital and developed the first websites for The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP). He is the Director of the University of Texas Psychiatric Pharmacy Program in San Antonio, having trained over 70 advanced practice pharmacists in psychiatric pharmacy. Dr. Saklad is a Founding Member of CPNP, served on the CPNP Board of Directors and was the founding senior editor of their peer-reviewed journal, the Mental Health Clinician. He has published articles and presented to many groups around the country on a variety of pharmacy and mental health-related topics. He is a principal or co-investigator for several studies of the efficacy and adverse effects of Phase II, III, and IV psychotropic agents in schizophrenia, mood disorders, and other serious mental illnesses, as well as their pharmacokinetics and interactions. He has received several honors, most recently the Judith J. Saklad Memorial Award from CPNP in 2012 and the Teaching Excellence Award from the UT College of Pharmacy in 2013.

Dr. Jason Schillerstrom is a Professor of Geriatric Psychiatry at UT Health San Antonio. He provides clinical care to elders with mood, anxiety, and cognitive disorders. He serves as a consultant to Adult Protective Services and local attorneys who request decisional capacity assessments for elders suffering from neglect or exploitation. Dr. Schillerstrom is the Residency Program Director for Psychiatry where he teaches and guides 78 civilian and active-duty psychiatrists in training.

Amanda comes to the College of Pharmacy from H-E-B where she was a Residency Site Preceptor and Interim Co-assistant Residency Program Director. She has also served as the Pharmacist in Charge at a local H-E-B Pharmacy for the last four years. Amanda received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in 2015. She completed her PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency through The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and H-E-B Pharmacy under Lauren Clark and Nathan Pope. As a community pharmacist and former residency graduate, she has worked to advance patient care each day by providing excellent patient-centered education and clinical services such as medication therapy management and immunizations. During her leadership with H-E-B Pharmacy, she oversaw the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine program at her site and the integration of several technician immunizers into the workflow. She strives to give back to the underserved in our community by volunteering as a pharmacist at the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic. Additionally, she has pursued leadership roles in professional organizations by serving on the board of directors and as past President of the Capital Area Pharmacy Association.

Dr. Garling is the principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI for research projects in community pharmacy settings spanning from telehealth, HIV PrEP, mental health, patient counseling, and medication adherence.  She currently serves as president of the Capital Area Pharmacist Association, Affairs Public Policy Council Member, and Public Policy Council Member of the Texas Pharmacist Association.  Her career pillars are focused on public activation, empowerment of underheard voices, and health education. Kerri Taylor is the Executive Director of Unbound Now Houston, the local chapter of Unbound Now, an international anti-human trafficking organization that focuses on domestic minor sex trafficking with specific emphasis on prevention efforts with at-risk youth. Unbound works to activate the community to fight human trafficking and is dedicated to public awareness, prevention education, professional training, and survivor advocacy.  Kerri serves on the board of the Brazoria County United Front Coalition to Fight Human Trafficking. In addition to being a member of the Child Sex Trafficking Advisory Council of Harris County, she works closely with the No Trafficking Zone, established in 2020 and with NRG stadium. Unbound Now Houston’s advocates are onsite at every Texans home football game, providing services for identified victims. In addition, she serves alongside other advocates in Galveston and Brazoria County as a coordinated response protocol for identified victims of human trafficking is developed. 
Kerri earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Baylor University with a specialization in Speech Pathology and Audiology and subsequently, a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the John A. Burn School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. She is retired from private practice, having served in the acute, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and home health settings specializing in neurogenic speech and swallow disorders.

Dr. Claire Latiolais graduated from Purdue University with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2015. She went on to complete an ASHP-accredited Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency in The Houston Program at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. Along with this program, she completed her Master’s in Pharmacy Leadership and Administration from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. She joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy (UTCOP) in 2018 and served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Dr. Kubes was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She graduated from Texas A&M University in 2006 with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences, then attended the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and graduated in 2011. Dr. Kubes continued her post-graduate education as a PGY1 resident at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Houston Medical Center and then a PGY2 pediatrics residency at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Following residency, she accepted a position as a Pediatric Critical Care Clinical Specialist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. In 2014, she relocated to San Antonio and took on the role of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Dr. Kubes joined the UT group in 2018 as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Pharmacotherapy Division of the College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin, as well as an Adjoint Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine and The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities within the college, Dr. Kubes is also responsible for clinical pharmacy services and caring for pediatric patients within the University Health System in San Antonio. Dr. Kubes also sits on the CTSHP board as a senior board member, has been appointed by the Texas Attorney General’s office and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission as a Texas Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Board Member, serves as the Chair for the UT-affiliated Residency Programs and vice chair for the general pediatrics special interest group for the Pediatric Pharmacy Association national organization. Her primary areas of research include quality improvement in pediatrics, cystic fibrosis and infectious diseases.
