Operation Naloxone is an interprofessional collaboration from faculty and students at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, School of Social Work, and Texas Overdose Naloxone Initiative. We provide overdose prevention and response education to students, health professionals, and the public to combat the opioid epidemic.  

This grant-funded activity will describe best practices for opioid overdose prevention, compare FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder, and descuss current controversies and ethical issues in opioid use disorder treatment.

Financial Disclosure / Commercial Supporting Grant Statement:
Development and availability of this course is supported by the Texas Health & Human Services Commission via a state block grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. A variety of survey data will be collected from participants to ensure programmatic quality and inform enhancements to the curriculum. In the event that this data is analyzed for research purposes, it will be aggregated and de-identified so participant responses remain confidential.
Course Format:  This course is broken down into 4 modules.
  1. Module 1 is a pre-assessment of attitudes required by the program funder.
  2. Module 2 is a pre-assessment of knowledge also required by the program funder.
  3. Module 3 is the content video, recorded at the 2018 Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy Conference, followed by a post-assessment of knowledge again.
  4. Module 4 is a post-assessment of attitudes and overall course evaluation.
Target Audience
This program is intended for pharmacists, physicians/psychiatrists, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and licensed counselors.

Presentation: From Survival to Recovery in Opioid Use Disorder

Lucas Hill earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City before completing a two-year primary care residency and faculty development fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hill is now a clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. He is Director of Operation Naloxone, a program that provides overdose prevention training and resources to students, health professionals, and the public. He also co-coordinates the Foundations for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice course established by UT Pharmacy, Nursing, Social Work, and Medicine. Dr. Hill is Faculty Advisor of the Student Pharmacist Recovery Network, Social Media Editor for iForumRx, and an affiliate of the Center for Health Communication.

Dr. Hill is the Director of Operation Naloxone.  Operation Naloxone received donations of branded naloxone formulations from Adapt Pharma (Fall 2016 to support on-campus overdose preparedness at UT Austin) and Kale?o Pharma (Fall 2017 to support outreach efforts to victims of Hurricane Harvey)

Review of Conflicts Policy:  The UT Austin College of Pharmacy has a very strict policy to ensure against commercial conflicts of interest in CE programming.  For this conference, the planning committee picks two committee members who have appropriate backgrounds to review content, and report any potential conflict of interest to the CPE Director.  If conflict issues are discovered, they are addressed with speakers to make appropriate changes. Evaluations are collected from all participants with specific questions around the listed conflicts of commercial interest.
