Evidence-Based Management of Heart Failure & High Cholesterol


 
 
 
 
Program Overview
 
The prevalence of heart failure (HF) has increased from 5.7 million to 6.5 million Americans, contributing to one in eight deaths and accounting for almost 400,000 deaths each year.  High cholesterol currently affects 99 million Americans or 45% of the adult population.1,2  Not only is it important for clinicians to understand how these diseases will impact their patients, but they must also be able to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of evidence-based therapeutics that are available for treatment.  Recent advances in treatment developments plus guideline updates for both HF and high cholesterol has given clinicians more information and data than ever before to consider when caring for their patients. This activity will help pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses to more effectively navigate evidence-based treatment options when caring for patients with heart failure and high cholesterol.

Program Goal
 
The overall goal is to enhance participants' knowledge about heart failure, high cholesterol, and the variety of therapeutics that are available to treat these conditions.  In addition, participants will also learn how to navigate evolving evidence, research, and guidelines that must be considered when using these therapeutics in clinical practice.
 
 
 
Program Format
 
There are a total of 4 modules in this activity.  Each modules may be taken individually, in any order, or collectively for a more comprehensive look at the treatment of heart failure (HF) and high cholesterol.  Modules I and II will prime learners with baseline knowledge about HF and high cholesterol and their currently available treatments. Module III will review treatment guidelines, evidence-based data, and patient characteristics that must be considered when developing patient-centered treatment plans for HF and high cholesterol.  Module IV will discuss comorbid conditions and emerging therapeutics and their potential impact on the treatment of HF and high cholesterol.  Finally, all 4 modules will also include faculty-guided case exercises that give the learner practice applying the information.   
 
Each module consists of the following:  ** 
  • Presentation Video (didactic slide presentation) 
  • Case Exercise & Video (complete case exercise while viewing faculty-guided case discussion video)
  • Post-Test (score > 70% within 5 attempts)
  • Evaluation (CE credit is awarded at the end of each module, upon completion of the module evaluation)

Target Audience
 
This activity is designed for pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians who care for patients with heart failure and/or high cholesterol in a community practice setting.

Requirements for Nursing Successful Completion: To receive contact hours for this continuing education activity, the participant must sign in or register, complete the entire module, and complete and submit the evaluation form. Once successful completion has been verified, a “Certificate of Successful Completion” will be awarded for nurses, up to a total of 6.5 contact hours as follows:

Learning Outcome: At the conclusion of this learning activity, the RN will verbalize the desire to change practice due to knowledge gain regarding application of the latest evidence-based guidelines and data on available treatments for heart failure and high cholesterol in order to develop patient-centered treatment plans.

Brief Bio : James A. Karboski, Pharm.D. is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy and Assistant Division Head in the Health Outcomes and Pharmacy Practice Division at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. He holds the Neill B. Walsdorf Fellowship in Pharmacy. Dr. Karboski earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Washington State University in 1985. Subsequently, Dr. Karboski earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio in 1987. He continued his training in Texas where he completed a Clinical Sciences Fellowship in Pharmacokinetics at the University of Texas at Austin.

Brief Bio : Rebekka Adamson is the cardiology clinical pharmacist at Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas. She completed her undergraduate training at Clemson University in South Carolina, her Doctorate of Pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, and then went on to complete her PGY-1 residency in Austin, Texas at Seton Healthcare Family. To pursue her passion for cardiology, Rebekka went on to complete a PGY-2 residency in cardiology pharmacy at Advent Health Orlando in Orlando, Florida. Rebekka’s clinical interests include anticoagulation, heart failure, and electrophysiology.
