Presentation:  Treatment Advances in Multiple Sclerosis
Bio: Jacquelyn L. Bainbridge, BSPharm, PharmD, FCCP, MSCS, FAES, is a Professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where she holds joint appointments in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Clinical Pharmacy, and the Department of Neurology in the School of Medicine. Dr Bainbridge received her doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Colorado in Denver, where she subsequently completed a specialty residency in neurology. Dr Bainbridge is a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist (MSCS) who is actively involved in clinical research in many areas of neurology, including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease (PD), back pain and cannabis.  She has reviewed and written several book chapters on MS, epilepsy, migraine, chronic pain, women’s issues, pharmacokinetics, and the practice of pharmacy. Dr Bainbridge is a frequent lecturer on topics of neurologic and pharmacologic interest, including chronic pain disorders, epilepsy, migraines, movement disorders, MS, neuroprotection, restless legs syndrome, Huntington’s disease and the administration of cannabis for therapeutic intent.

  • Briefly describe the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) and its symptomatic impact on patients’ quality of life.
  • Explain the available pharmacologic treatment approaches for multiple sclerosis with regards to disease subtype, mechanism of action, effectiveness and adverse effects.
  • Identify emerging treatments and the potential impact on practice.
  • Explain how pharmacists can assist patients to address key barriers MS patients often face when managing their illness.

The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  This online activity is approved for 0.125 CEUs (1.25 contact hours) of continuing education credit. For this conference, the planning committee picks two committee members who have appropriate backgrounds to review content, and report any potential conflict of interest to the CPE Director. If conflict issues are discovered, they are addressed with speakers to make appropriate changes.
