Learning Objectives
  • Explain evidence-based and more effective approaches for pharmacists to apply when determining OTC recommendations for allergic rhinitis.
  • Differentiate the different levels of allergic rhinitis and when patients should be referred to seek medical care.
  • Identify OTC treatment for the different levels of allergic rhinitis, including potential treatment barriers and counseling points for the patient.
  • Recommend types of OTC items for allergic rhinitis that should be in every medicine cabinet.

The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This online activity is approved for 0.10 CEUs (1.00 contact hour) of continuing education credit. To receive 1.00 contact hour of CE credit, the participant must watch the included video in its entirety, pass the online post-test ( >70% within 5 attempts), and complete the online evaluation. Upon successfully completing the course evaluation, the continuing pharmacy education credits will automatically be uploaded to CPE Monitor (allow 3-7 days).

Sharon Rush received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree in 1986. She practiced as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, Central Texas Immunization Coordinator, and PGY-1 residency preceptor during her 23 years with a large community pharmacy chain. She joined the faculty of the Division of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in July 2010. She is the Community Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator for the college and the Austin/Temple/Waco Community Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator for the fourth-year professional students. Professor Rush has been involved with direct patient care programs for many years, such as pharmacy-based immunizations, health screenings, Medication Therapy Management, and Disease State Management. She is a certified instructor for the APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate program for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the APhA Medication Therapy Management certificate program, and the NACDS Point of Care certificate program. All PharmD students at UT earn their immunization and medication therapy management certificates under her instruction. She provides the annual 3-hour continuing education Immunization Update for the Texas Pharmacy Association and The University of Texas College of Pharmacy Pharmacy Practice Seminar.

Terry Weaver is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Pharmacy Practice. Terry earned his B.S. in pharmacy from the College of Pharmacy in 1997 and has served the university for more than 15 years; first as a staff pharmacist and most recently as pharmacist-in-charge at the Forty Acres Pharmacy. He has worked with the Division of Pharmacy Practice on past courses and committees, and he now assists the division in teaching the Experiential Patient Counseling course, Pharmacy Practice Labs, Foundations of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (FICP) and various electives, along with mentoring students in Foundations of Professional Development (FPD) and third-year projects in Interprofessional Education (IPE).
