A National First at the Fourty Acres

As the first institution in the country to offer CPD as an open-enrollment program, UT Austin provides a unique "collaboration hub." Unlike internal employer-based training, our Intensives bring together pharmacists from diverse backgrounds and practice environments. This diversity allows for a rich exchange of ideas, peer-to-peer coaching, and a broader perspective on the challenges facing the profession today.

Target Audience - Pharmacists
Pharmacists who want to complete CPD cycles for BPS re-certification, prepare for a career change, or focus their CE journey on their personal and professional development.

Continuing Professional Development

Information and Instructions

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an approach to lifelong learning. The American Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) defines CPD as a self-directed, ongoing, systematic, and outcomes-focused approach to lifelong learning that is applied to practice. It involves the process of active participation in formal and informal learning activities that assist individuals in developing and maintaining continuing competence, enhancing their professional practice, and supporting the achievement of their career goals. The principles of CPD have already been incorporated into continuing education systems in several countries, including Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

In 2024, ACPE launched new criteria for CPD in the USA that operates similarly to the traditional CPE Credit program. The main difference is that the individual pharmacist drives their own learning goals and outcomes. As a CPE and CPD Provider, The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy may now organize both CPE and CPD programs and award CE credit for CPD efforts.

CPD: Empowering Pharmacists in Their Learning Journey
CPD puts pharmacists in command of their own learning!

How It Works
The CPD process involves a cycle of learning that begins with reflecting on one's career, knowledge, and areas for improvement. Next, pharmacists plan their professional development, setting goals for improvement in their practice, themselves, and the profession, while articulating specific steps and actions to achieve these individual goals. Then, pharmacists execute their learning plan and apply and evaluate their professional development over a set timeframe. To earn credit, pharmacists work through this learning cycle and document their progress as they go along. The results and impact of CPD depend on the individual and the effort they invest. The role of the CPD Provider (UT Austin College of Pharmacy) is to offer a structure and documentation to help guide and coach pharmacists through their individual CPD plans.

UT Austin's CPD Approach:
As one of the first CPD Providers in the USA, The College of Pharmacy's Center for Continuing Professional Development aims to provide support and structure to make completing the CPD Cycle as easy as possible, allowing pharmacists to focus on their professional development. We are using a CPD webinar structure approach, which integrates the CPD Cycle components into any conference or thematic program.

UT Austin's CPD Format
Pharmacists can complete a CPD Cycle through the following steps:

REFLECTION (Pre-Workshop)
Before the live workshop, pharmacists will complete online surveys. For this program, these surveys are directly connected to the conference's overall theme.

PLAN (During the Event)
During the live workshop, pharmacists, whether attending in person or via live broadcast, will be guided to set personal and professional goals. This includes articulating specific, targeted, and measurable first SMART objectives: specific, measurable, appropriate, and relevant action steps that can be taken in 3 month timelines moving towards the overall goal.

LEARN, APPLY, EVALUATE (Post-Workshop)
After the live event, and with their PLAN in hand, pharmacists will engage in their learning plan, apply what they've learned in practice, and evaluate its impact. To document this process and complete the CPD Cycle, pharmacists will return to the conference/event LMS site and complete follow-up surveys at the three, six, and nine month marks.

DOCUMENT (Built into the Learning Management System/LMS)
One of the hallmarks of CPD is thorough documentation of your CPD Cycle. We facilitate this by recording each step through online surveys. This includes the reflection surveys completed before the event, a record of your goals set during the event, and the details of your learning, application, and evaluation activities after the event. All surveys you complete within our LMS will be accessible to you.

EASY
Our primary goal is to provide a very simple structure so you can focus your time and energy on your personal and professional development. Each survey is straightforward and quick to complete. You can return to view, download, print, or even edit any survey as needed. We're committed to making it easy for you to complete the CPD components.

A completed CPD Cycle comes with 10 CE credits! It's a new way to earn your Continuing Education, but entirely on your terms!

Program Schedule: Step by Step
Completing your CPD Cycle is simple. Follow these five steps:

  1. Register for the CPD Program - Your registration begins your nine-month CPD Cycle. Bookmark this page, as you will return here throughout your CPD Cycle.
  2. Complete the Introduction to CPD On-Demand Video - Learn how the CPD process works and how to prepare for your CPD Cycle. In addition to the video, review the program materials, worksheets, and survey documents available in the Course Materials section (login required). After completing the video, complete the evaluation to earn 1 hour of CPE credit. Portions of the video are also included in the sections below for reference and instruction as you progress, so you will not need to return to the full video each time.
  3. Complete Your Pre-Workshop Reflection - Before the live webinar, read the Reflection introduction for additional guidance and complete the online Reflection Survey. You do not need to complete every component, but thoughtful responses will create a more useful record of your professional growth and help you prepare for the webinar. After completion, you can download a PDF of your survey for your records and, when applicable, use it as documentation of your CPD activities, such as for submission to MyBPS if you are BPS certified. Plan for 30–45 minutes, recognizing that the more thought you put into your reflection, the more meaningful your CPD Cycle will be.
  4. Attend the Live CPD Webinar - Because you have already completed the introductory video and Reflection Survey, the 1-hour webinar will move directly into developing and articulating your professional goals and translating them into SMART objectives. We recommend having an AI application of your choice available during the workshop to help you draft and refine your goals and objectives. Plan to attend the webinar in full. By the end of the session, you should have entered your goals and SMART objectives that will guide your professional development over the next nine months. If you cannot attend, we can move you to another available program date.
  5. Complete Your 3, 6, and 9-Month Check-Ins - Return to this same website at each milestone, log in, and complete the online Learn, Apply, and Evaluate surveys. These check-ins give you an opportunity to document your progress, reflect on your growth, and adjust your SMART objectives as your needs and circumstances evolve. Plan for approximately 30 minutes per check-in. Each survey will remain open for the full month, and email reminders will be sent to help you stay on track.

Your complete CPD Cycle takes nine months. We will email you instructions and reminders throughout the process so you know what to complete and when.

What Counts for CPD

CPD Examples:
The goal of CPD is to guide pharmacists through their own self-determined continuing professional development process, with easy documentation along the way. Your plan and goals are completely up to you!

Do What Already Works for YOU:
You know how you learn best. You can simply apply CPD to your existing learning habits! You likely already have resources you frequently consult for the latest information. All you need to do is articulate your current process within your CPD goals. You can earn CE credit for simply doing what already works best for you!
  • Journal Updates: You might already read specific journals and sources regularly to stay current on the latest treatments. Set your CPD goals to get even more out of how you learn!
  • Annual Conferences: Perhaps you already attend professional conferences or even volunteer for leadership roles with those groups. Set your CPD goals to enhance your learning at your annual conferences!
  • Projects at Work: You may already be developing processes or collecting data to improve your work. Use your CPD goals as a plan to make measurable changes that enhance your current practice!
  • Work-Life Balance: You might already have a process that helps you reduce stress and balance your work and personal life. You can set your CPD goals around activities that keep you balanced and ready to be the best pharmacist you can be!

Try Something New:
Many of us have practice, personal, and professional goals we want to achieve. You can align your CPD goals with these new aspirations and use CPD to outline specific steps for achieving fresh professional development.
  • Something You’ve Always Wanted to Do…: Are there areas of practice or professional leadership you've always wanted to explore but haven't? Set a long-term goal and then outline the first action steps toward that goal in your CPD plan!
  • Career Changes: Is there a career advancement or change you've wanted to make? Set your CPD goals to start working toward the career you truly desire!
  • Taking Care of Yourself: Have you felt burned out, or feel like you're on that path? Set CPD goals to prioritize self-care and improve your work-life integration. You can set a CPD goal for new self-care routines or to expand on what you already do.
  • Go for that Leadership Role: Have you always wanted to run for office in a professional organization? Set your CPD goals to begin your leadership journey!
  • Improve Skills: Can you identify gaps in your skill-sets for communication, leadership, use of technology, or any other healthcare-related skills? Use your CPD goals to set a path for learning and improvement!
Your CPD goals are yours! Make them count!

UT CPD and BPS
Completing a UT CPD Itensive counts towards your BPS recertification requirements! You can use your notes and documentation in a UT CPD Intensive to upload to the MyBPS account. You can get all 10 credits just by completing the CPD cycle. For BPS recertification progress, activities must be self-reported into the board-certified pharmacist’s MyBPS account.

CPD: REFLECT - Complete Before the November 11 Webinar

CPD: REFLECT - Introduction

Understanding the ACPE CPD Cycle

The ACPE defines Continuing Professional Development as a self-directed, ongoing systematic process of planning, participating in, and documenting learning. Unlike traditional CE (which is often reactive), CPD is proactive.

The cycle consists of five interconnected stages:

  1. Reflect: Identify your learning needs based on your actual practice.

  2. Plan: Create SMART objectives to meet those needs.

  3. Learn: Engage in educational activities.

  4. Evaluate: Assess if the learning actually improved your practice.

  5. Record & Share: Document your progress for your portfolio and peers.

The Power of Reflection

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is different from traditional continuing education. In a typical CPE activity, the primary goal is often to complete the program, pass a post-test if required, and earn credit. With CPD, the focus shifts from simply earning credit to intentionally improving your professional practice and planning your future growth.

The most important thing to understand is that the value you receive from this reflection is directly related to the effort you invest in it. You will earn credit for completing the activity, but the real benefit comes from taking the time to thoughtfully examine your accomplishments, strengths, learning needs, and professional goals.

The participants who gain the most from this process are those who:
  • Take time to reflect honestly on their experiences.
  • Carefully consider their accomplishments and lessons learned.
  • Thoughtfully identify meaningful professional or practice gaps.
  • Use the exercise to guide future learning and career development.
Think of this activity as an investment in yourself. The more specific, thoughtful, and reflective your responses are, the more useful this process will be for identifying opportunities for growth and creating a meaningful professional development plan.

How to Complete the Reflection

To complete this activity, open the next tab and complete the CPD Reflection Survey. The survey will guide you through a series of structured reflection exercises designed to help you:
  • Recognize your accomplishments and strengths.
  • Reflect on your professional identity and purpose.
  • Evaluate how you learn and develop professionally.
  • Assess your growth across key competency domains.
  • Identify practice, professional, or contribution gaps.
  • Begin planning meaningful goals for future development.
There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is to create a personal reflection that helps you understand where you are today, where you want to grow, and how you can intentionally develop over the coming months.

Remember: You will receive CE credit for completing the activity, but the greatest reward is the insight you gain from the reflection itself. The more you put into the process, the more you will get out of it.

Through these three steps, you move from being a practitioner of the past to being the architect of your future.

CPD REFECT Survey

CPD Reflection

The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Reflection is a structured self-assessment designed to help practitioners take a step back from their day-to-day work, recognize their accomplishments, evaluate their strengths, identify areas for growth, and create a focused plan for future professional development. Rather than concentrating solely on continuing education credits earned, this process encourages you to think about your overall growth as a healthcare professional.

How It Works

The reflection follows a progression from looking back to looking forward:
  1. Reflect on Your Accomplishments
    • Identify key achievements from the past year.
    • Recognize the skills, behaviors, and strategies that contributed to your success.
  2. Clarify Your Professional Identity
    • Reflect on your professional purpose, values, and unique contributions.
    • Consider how you describe yourself and your work to others.
  3. Examine How You Learn
    • Identify the learning methods that most effectively support your clinical and professional growth.
    • Consider formal and informal learning experiences.
  4. Assess Your Strengths
    • Evaluate your strengths across core competency domains.
    • Connect your accomplishments to the skills you use most effectively.
  5. Evaluate Your Growth
    • Determine where you are actively developing, maintaining, or potentially neglecting important competencies.
  6. Review Your Professional Presence
    • Update your résumé, CV, VITA, and LinkedIn profile to reflect your current expertise and accomplishments.
  7. Identify Professional Gaps
    • Define areas where further growth would improve your practice, career development, or contributions to the profession.
    • Use these insights to guide future CPD planning and learning activities.

Why This Reflection Is Important

Professional growth does not happen automatically. The most successful practitioners regularly assess where they have been, where they are now, and where they want to go next. This reflection helps you:
  • Recognize and document your accomplishments.
  • Increase awareness of your strengths and expertise.
  • Identify meaningful learning and development opportunities.
  • Align future learning activities with real professional needs.
  • Develop intentional goals rather than simply completing educational requirements.
  • Create a record of professional growth that can support career advancement, leadership development, and lifelong learning.

Key Takeaway

This reflection is not an evaluation or test. It is a personal professional development exercise designed to help you celebrate your successes, understand your current capabilities, and identify the next steps that will have the greatest impact on your professional growth and practice.

CPD: PLAN: Live Webinar on November 11

CPD: Live Webinar Program Description & Logistics

Welcome to Texas CPD: From Reflection to Action

A New Standard of Excellence

Welcome to the live portion of the Texas CPD program. By completing your professional retrospective and identifying your "Gaps" online, you have already done the hardest part: you’ve looked honestly at where you are and where you want to go. Now, we begin the work of building the bridge between the two.

Webinar Information:

For the workshop, there are two optionss to join the live webinar: Noon to 1pm Central Standard Time.  You will find the webinar links listed here as well as at the top of the page on the day of the program, and in the reminder email.  You must join the live webinar and participate fullying for up to 1 full hour.  You will need to enter your CPD goals and SMART objectives for at least one of your goals in order to receive CE credit for the PLAN portion and to move forward to the LEARN, APPLY, and EVALUATE check-ins and earn additional CPD credit.

If you are unable to join for the full hour, we encourage you to move your registration to future workshop.

The Canvas is Yours

For the workshop, we invite you to step away from the daily pressures of the pharmacy counter or the clinical floor. This is a rare space designed for exploration, creativity, and professional design. We encourage you to think outside the box. CPD is not a box-checking exercise; it is an iterative process of self-creation. As we dive into today’s lessons and interactive exercises:

  • Be Audacious: Don’t just aim for the goal that is "easy"—aim for the one that excites you.

  • Be Collaborative: Engage with your peers. Often, the best solution to a practice gap is found in the shared wisdom of this room.

  • Be Present: Use this time to truly "work on" your career, rather than just "working in" it.

Setting the Stage for Your Needs

Today’s journey culminates in a concrete output: the creation of your SMART objectives. While these objectives are just the beginning of your long-term professional goals, they represent the vital first strides toward closing your Gaps. You aren't just writing a plan; you are architecting the next phase of your legacy as a pharmacist.

Enjoy the Experience

You are part of an elite group of practitioners taking part in one of the first programs of this kind in the nation. You are already an amazing professional—today is simply about unlocking the "Next" version of your impact.

Dive in, engage deeply, and most importantly, enjoy the process of becoming.

CPD PLAN Webinar: Setting the Goals and your SMART Objectives

CPD PLAN - Setting the Goals and your SMART Objectives

Putting Action to Your Goals

Goal: To translate high-level aspirations into a phased execution plan. You will create a tiered timeline of SMART Objectives that serve as your professional CPD Plan for the next nine months.

Part 1: The SMART Refresher

A SMART objective is a specialized framework used to turn a vague desire into a concrete, actionable plan. In the context of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), it is the difference between "wanting to be a better leader" and "completing a specific leadership certification by Q3."

Before we write, we calibrate. To meet ACPE and BPS standards, every objective must be:
  • Specific: What exactly will you do?
  • Measurable: How will you prove you did it?
  • Attainable: Can you realistically do this while working?
  • Relevant: Does it actually close the gap you identified?
  • Time-bound: When is the "due date" for this specific milestone?

Part 2: The Phased Workshop

You will now map your three pillars (Work, Growth, Legacy) onto a 9-month timeline. Use your AI-generated blueprints from the previous session as a starting point, but hand-refine them into your own voice.

The Timeline Strategy:
  • 3-Month Milestones (The "Launch"): Focus on foundational learning or immediate "quick wins."
    • Example: "By June, I will complete 5 hours of CE specifically in pharmacogenomics interpretation."
  • 6-Month Milestones (The "Application"): Focus on applying that learning to your practice or leadership role.
    • Example: "By September, I will conduct a pilot review of 10 patient charts using the new genomic protocol."
  • 9-Month Milestones (The "Achievement"): Focus on finalized outcomes or "Stewardship" goals.
    • Example: "By December, I will present my findings to our interprofessional committee to advocate for a permanent protocol change."

Part 3:  Let AI Help you Articulate Goals - Co-Coach

Goal: To use generative AI as a sounding board to pressure-test, refine, and expand on professional goals while developing the critical "AI Literacy" needed to spot hallucinations or errors.

NOTE: We are utilizing open generative AI systems to help individuals explore their reflections, goals, and next steps.  You are asked to use the open and free AI generative system of your choice and only in ways that are comfortable to you. We ask that you approach this with curiosity and play.  Your ultimate goals and objectives are yours to write, but AI has been helpful in allowing learners to explore different approaches that they may not have throught about before.

Instructions

You have your goals. Now, we’re going to step into the Lab. For the next 30 minutes, you will use a Generative AI system (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.) as your personal professional development coach.

The goal isn't to let the AI write your life story, it’s to use it to interrogate your ideas. You will use specific prompts to help you see "blind spots" in your goals and then practice the critical skill of editing and verification.

Learning Objectives
  • Apply AI-assisted strategies to support professional development planning
  • Develop meaningful lifelong learning goals for professional growth.
  • Create and submit SMART objectives to learn, apply, and evaluate change over the next nine months

CPD: LEARN, APPY, EVALUATE - Next Step Instructions

LEARN, APPY, EVALUATE

Now you are off to put your plans into action!

The 9-Month Journey: From Plan to Practice

The Concept: A Rhythmic Approach to Growth

Now that you have architected your goals and set your initial SMART objectives, you are entering the most rewarding phase of the CPD Intensive: The Application. Over the next nine months, we have designed a rhythmic "check-in" structure to help you navigate your progress. While every professional path is unique, we suggest a general flow to help focus your energy:

  • Months 1–3 (The Learning Phase): Focus on acquiring new knowledge, attending workshops, or researching best practices.

  • Months 4–6 (The Application Phase): Begin integrating what you’ve learned into your daily clinical or leadership environment.

  • Months 7–9 (The Evaluation Phase): Step back to assess the impact of your changes on patient care, your team, or your own professional fulfillment.

A Message on the "Perfect Path" (Hint: It Doesn't Exist)

In a clinical setting, we often look for precision and predictability. However, professional growth is rarely a straight line.

This is a journey, not a strict process. We want to be clear: It is okay if your path doesn't look like a textbook.

  • Life happens.

  • Clinical priorities shift.

  • Bumps in the road are not "failures"—they are simply data points that help you pivot.

If you find that a SMART objective you wrote three months ago no longer serves your current practice, change it. If you hit a challenge that slows you down, breathe. The "Delta" is not a gap you must sprint across; it is a space for you to explore, iterate, and evolve.

Celebrate the "Small Wins" Along the Way

Don't wait until Month 9 to feel successful. We encourage you to find joy in the process itself.

  • Celebrate the first time you apply a new skill, even if it feels clunky.

  • Take pride in the check-ins, even if your update is "I’m still working on this."

  • Stay Curious: Dive into the lessons and see where they lead you. You are one of the most highly regarded professionals in the world, and the fact that you are dedicated to this level of growth is a testament to your character.

The Road Ahead

We will be with you every three months to check in and see how you’re doing. These aren't "tests"; they are milestones to help you pause and acknowledge how far you’ve come.

Enjoy the ride, dive into the challenges, and be proud of every step forward you take.

CPD LEARN: 3 Month Check In

CPD: Learning 3-Month Check-in

You are Putting your Plan into Action! How’s it going?
Welcome to your first formal check-in. Three months ago, at the CPD Intensive, you stood on the Forty Acres and mapped out a vision for your future. Today is about taking a tactical pause to see how that map matches the terrain of your daily practice. This session is designed to help you document your progress, troubleshoot barriers, and earn your next increment of CE credit as you move from "Planning" to "Applying."

First: Congratulations on getting started. Taking the first step is often the hardest part of any transformation. This survey serves as your official documentation and recording step, but more importantly, it is a space dedicated entirely to you. As pharmacy professionals, we spend our days caring for others; this is your scheduled time to care for yourself and your own professional evolution.

Remember: There is no such thing as failure in CPD.
If the last 90 days didn't go exactly as planned, you are still succeeding. Perhaps life changed, priorities shifted, or your initial assumptions were simply too ambitious. That isn't a setback, it's data. For many of you, this may be the first time in your career that you have stopped to intentionally reflect on and plan your development. It takes practice to shift your thinking toward the CPD model.

Be honest in this review. No one is grading you, and no one is judging your individual progress. This process is yours alone. Whether you’ve cleared every hurdle or discovered that you need to draw a completely new map, you are learning.

Enjoy this process, have fun with the reflection, and remember: there are no shortcomings here, only new insights. Now, let’s get started on your 3-month check-in.

Learning Objectives:
  • Document specific learning activities and initial progress made toward established SMART professional development goals.
  • Identify primary barriers encountered during the first 90 days of plan implementation to determine necessary tactical adjustments.

CPD APPLY: 6 Month Check In

CPD: Momentum 6-Month Check-in

You’ve Reached the Midway Point! How is the momentum?
Welcome to your 6-month formal check-in. Half a year ago, you stood on the Forty Acres and mapped out a vision for your future. Today is about taking a strategic pause to see how that map has evolved as you’ve navigated the real-world terrain of your daily practice. This session is designed to help you document your progress, refine your strategy, and earn your next increment of CE credit as you move from Applying to Mastering your professional evolution.

First: Congratulations on making it this far. Let’s be honest—many people start a journey like this, but few stay the course for six full months. By showing up today, you are already going above and beyond. However, we also know that in six months, everything can change.

If you have followed your plan to the letter: Congratulations! You somehow managed to predict the future perfectly. Perhaps you should consider a side career as a fortune teller! But for the rest of us… if your priorities shifted, if your schedule exploded, or if you simply didn’t do everything you wanted to do… congratulations to you, too. You are a normal, busy professional navigating a demanding field.

This process belongs to you, and you alone. As you move through this review, remember the core rule of CPD: There is no failure, only learning. If you didn't hit a goal, that is simply an invitation to pivot. This is likely the first time in your career you’ve used a structured process to actually reflect on your growth over half a year. That experience in itself is a massive win.

Be honest and have fun with this. No one is grading your progress or judging your "shortcomings." Use this time to care for your own development with the same diligence you use to care for your patients. Whether you are sticking to the original map or drawing a brand-new one today, you are taking command of your career.

Let’s dive into your 6-month check-in and see where the momentum takes you next.

Learning Objectives:
  • Evaluate the impact of applied new knowledge on current pharmacy practice, workflow, or patient care interactions.
  • Modify mid-term SMART objectives based on an assessment of the evolving professional priorities.
