Pharmacy Practice Seminar LogoThe 74th Annual Pharmacy Practice Seminar (PPS) is officially merging with the Health Systems Pharmacy Practice (HSPP) seminar for an epic, three-day two-track experience from Friday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27. This isn’t just another weekend of lectures; it’s a high-impact program designed to equip both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with cutting-edge tools and "Monday-ready" knowledge to immediately elevate patient care. We’ve removed the barriers, you no longer have to choose between tracks. Instead, you can jump between Community and Health Systems sessions to build a customizable schedule that fits your unique professional journey (all content will be recorded and released in November for on-demand viewing so you not miss a think regardless of the session you attend live - note the DEA session on Sunday will NOT be recorded)

This seminar is intended for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who practice in community pharmacies and health systems settings.
 
Attendance Options: In-Person or Online
Registrants can join us live in person in Austin, Texas, via a live Zoom webinar, watch on-demand later, or any combination of live and on-demand viewing. All presentations will be recorded and available for on-demand viewing throughout the next year. Welcome to a celebration of pharmacy practice! We are thrilled to have you join us for a weekend of elite clinical deep dives and high-energy networking. Whether you are reconnecting with old classmates or meeting new colleagues, we hope you enjoy the "Implementation Advantage" and the best of Austin hospitality.

 

IN-PERSON ATTENDEES: THE AUSTIN EXPERIENCE
Where to Go The seminar is held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Austin. Upon arrival, head straight to the Registration Desk located just outside the main conference rooms to pick up your materials and name tag.
 
Friday Night: Kickoff & Clinical Updates Friday is a "choose your own adventure" evening! Starting at 6:00 PM, we invite you to our Welcome Reception for drinks and hors d'oeuvres. At 6:30 PM, we will begin our first clinical sessions:
  • The Immunization Update
  • The Sterile Compounding Update
Feel free to float between the reception and the sessions to get your first CE credits of the weekend while catching up with colleagues.
 
Parking (It’s on us!) Good news! Parking in the hotel garage is completely free for our attendees. Simply bring your parking ticket to the registration desk, and we will validate it for you.
 
The Weekend Social Schedule
  • Checking-in: The Registration Table will open at 7:00 AM.  Breakfast will be provided each morning with the first session starting promptly at 8:00 AM
  • Tracks: Starting Saturday morning there will be two tracks of sessions, Health-Systems and Community.  You can pick from any session that fits your practice best.  For Sunday, the full day is divided into the two tracks. 
  • Community Sessions: After lunch on Saturday, both tracks will meet in the main ballroom for our Keynote, New Drug Update, and Texas Pharmacy Law.
  • Saturday Social: Keep the momentum going with a second reception immediately following the final CE session at 5:00 PM.
  • Exhibitor Hall: Visit our exhibitors throughout the weekend to see the latest industry innovations.
  • Student Organization Sales: On Sunday, our UT student groups will be on-site selling gear—don't forget to stop by and support them!
What to Wear Dress is business casual—emphasizing the casual. Hotel conference rooms tend to run cold, so we highly recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater.

CONTINUING PHARMACY EDUCATION CREDIT - CPE
Be sure to log in!  When you register, you will be asked to enter your NABP profile and your date of birth (month/day). This learning management system will use that data to load your CPE credits to your profiles.  You will receive CPE credit for any session that you attend in full and complete the online evaluation. The system automatically loads your CPE credit after you complete the online evaluation for each session.
 
After you attend a session either live in-person, watching live through the live Zoom broadcast, or later by watched the recorded videos*, complete the online evaluation attached to that session.  You must be logged in to access the evaluations.  The evaluations follow the ACPE regulations for evaluations, you will notice a pattern as you complete them. 
 
BE HONEST - We do not believe in policing professional pharmacists on their attendance.  We use the professional honor system where we know you will only complete evaluations for sessions that you fully attended.  There are two tracks, so please note the session you are completing the evaluation for, and please avoid claiming the concurrent sessions - its impossible to be in two places at once :-). 
 
*The DEA session on Sunday is only available for CPE credit for those attending in-person or watching the LIVE broadcast.  We are not allowed to record this session, it will not be included in the on-demand program when ready.

Dr. Claire Latiolais graduated from Purdue University with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2015. She went on to complete an ASHP accredited Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency in The Houston Program at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. Along with this program, she completed her Master’s in Pharmacy Leadership and Administration from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. She joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy (UTCOP) in 2018 and served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Pharmacy Practice. In the fall of 2022, Dr. Latiolais transitioned into a new role at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist on the Medication Management and Informatics team. In addition, Dr. Latiolais continued an appointment with UTCOP as the Experiential Regional Director for the Galveston/Houston Region until 2025. Dr. Latiolais is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) where she served on the 2019-2020 New Practitioners Forum Executive Committee and currently serves on the Section Pharmacy Educators Executive Committee, the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) where she serves as Vice - Chair of the Education Affairs Council, the Central Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CTSHP) where she served as a Board Member, Phi Lambda Sigma, Phi Delta Chi, and Rho Chi.

Abby has contributed to industry standards as a USP Compounding Expert Committee member and active CETA leader. She frequently speaks for state boards and national organizations and holds an ASQ Certified Manager Quality/Organizational Excellence certification.

Sharon Rush received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree in 1986.  She practiced as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, Central Texas Immunization Coordinator, and PGY-1 residency preceptor during her years with a large community pharmacy chain.  She joined the faculty of the Division of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in July 2010.  She is the Community Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator for the college and co-coordinator of the P1 Pharmacy Practice Lab sequence.  She currently chairs the Region Assignment Appeals working group.  Professor Rush has been involved with direct patient care programs for many years.  She is a certified instructor for the APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate program for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the APhA Medication Therapy Management certificate program, and the NACDS Point of Care certificate program.  She serves on the Texas Pharmacy Association’s Public Policy Council and Association Affairs Council, The American Pharmacists Association APPM Immunizing Pharmacists SIG Education committee, and is currently the chair of the American Academy of Colleges of Pharmacy Preceptor Development Committee.

Happy Saturday! Welcome to our first full day of the 74th Annual PPS. We have an incredible lineup ahead, blending deep clinical expertise with the leadership skills needed for modern practice.
 
We kick things off this morning with our split tracks: Community and Health Systems Pharmacy Practice. Each track features four high-impact clinical topics. If you’re struggling to choose between a Community session and a Health Systems update, don’t sweat it! We’ve eliminated the "FOMO" (Fear Of Missing Out) by recording every single session. Your registration includes full access to the entire on-demand library starting in mid-November, so you can catch every bit of content regardless of where you sit today.

Dr. Kathryn Lin is a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist with a practice site at CommUnityCare Health Center’s Southeast Health and Wellness Center in Austin, TX. Her clinical interests include diabetes and cardiology. As a Clinical Assistant Professor, she teaches in the Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Skills courses as well as electives, such as Ambulatory Care and Herbal & Botanical Supplements.
Dr. Lin received her B.A. in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and her Doctor of Pharmacy at Belmont University College of Pharmacy.  She completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC and a PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at CommUnityCare Health Centers.

Morgan Stewart is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Dr. Stewart received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. She completed a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency at The Ohio State University, followed by a PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency at the University of Colorado. Dr. Stewart is a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist (BCACP) and practices as a clinical pharmacist at CommUnityCare Federally Qualified Health Centers in Austin, Texas. Her clinical pharmacy services include chronic disease state management via collaborative drug therapy management protocols, comprehensive medication reviews, medication and disease state education for patients, as well as pharmacotherapy education for health care providers and clinical staff. Dr. Stewart coordinates and teaches in the Pharmacotherapy of the Endocrine System module as well as co-coordinates the Patient-Centered Diabetes Care elective. Additionally, she teaches in various pharmacotherapy modules on ambulatory care topics and precepts pharmacy students for both introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences at her clinic. She is involved in many professional organizations including APhA and AACP.

  • Classify common contrast agents by chemical properties, mechanism of action, and administration route (IV vs. oral, iodinated vs. gadolinium-based).
  • Apply the latest ACR guidelines to assess patient risk for contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF).
  • Develop an evidence-based management plan for iodine allergies and acute contrast hypersensitivity reactions, including appropriate premedication regimens.

After serving on faculty with Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy, Justin returned to his hometown of Tyler to practice pharmacy at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. While at Trinity Mother Frances, he served in various capacities from staff pharmacist to director of pharmacy. Justin is now Director of Corporate Clinical Pharmacy for CHRISTUS Health, where he provides clinical pharmacy guidance and support for over 300 pharmacists across the CHRISTUS organization from New Mexico to Louisiana. His professional interests include teaching, pharmacy management and quality improvement, and clinical pharmacy informatics. Justin precepts a non-patient care P4 elective rotation and has served as a pharmacy mentor to numerous students and residents for the past ten years. Justin and his wife, Kate, live in Tyler, TX, with their four sons, and are excited to have their oldest son on the UT campus this fall.

He provides integrated mental health services at Ascension Seton, Dell Med’s hospital affiliate, and serves as the principal investigator on a HRSA-funded grant supporting the Integrated Behavioral Health Scholars Program, a cross-campus initiative addressing the behavioral health workforce shortage in Texas. Berg holds courtesy faculty appointments in The University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Psychology, Department of Educational Psychology and the School of Social Work. A proud Longhorn, Berg earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in psychology and his master’s and doctoral degrees in counseling psychology from UT Austin, where he also completed his internship training. Daniel R. Carroll, Pharm.D., R.Ph., serves as the Texas State Board of Pharmacy TSBP’s Executive Director/Secretary. Dr. Carroll’s tenure as Executive Director began on October 23, 2023. Dr. Carroll comes to TSBP with decades of pharmacy and leadership experience. Before becoming a pharmacist, Dr. Carroll practiced as a pharmacy technician. Over the course of his career as a pharmacist, Dr. Carroll has practiced extensively in hospital settings. He also assumed several leadership roles in these settings, serving as Director of Pharmacy at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, Texas; Cedar Park Regional; and Seton Family of Hospitals at both Brackenridge and Shoal Creek in Austin, Texas. Most recently, Dr. Carroll served as the CEO of Northwest Hills Surgical Hospital. Dr. Carroll has also been active in his community as a volunteer pharmacist, a mentor to students interested in careers in healthcare, a healthcare topics presenter, and has been involved with several pharmacy-focused committees. Dr. Carroll obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently working toward his Master of Science in Healthcare Administration through Texas Tech.

Sharon Rush received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree in 1986.  She practiced as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, Central Texas Immunization Coordinator, and PGY-1 residency preceptor during her years with a large community pharmacy chain.  She joined the faculty of the Division of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in July 2010.  She is the Community Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator for the college and co-coordinator of the P1 Pharmacy Practice Lab sequence.  She currently chairs the Region Assignment Appeals working group.  Professor Rush has been involved with direct patient care programs for many years.  She is a certified instructor for the APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate program for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the APhA Medication Therapy Management certificate program, and the NACDS Point of Care certificate program.  She serves on the Texas Pharmacy Association’s Public Policy Council and Association Affairs Council, The American Pharmacists Association APPM Immunizing Pharmacists SIG Education committee, and is currently the chair of the American Academy of Colleges of Pharmacy Preceptor Development Committee.

His postgraduate training includes a PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Saint Michael’s Medical Center and a PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Residency at Rutgers/Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.  Holding dual board certifications in pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and emergency medicine (BCEMP), and recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology (DABAT), his clinical expertise is heavily anchored in toxicology and emergency resuscitation.  He is a widely published author and national speaker on complex acute care topics, and he is a dedicated advocate for modernizing clinical education to prepare healthcare professionals for the integration of advanced biologics, biosimilars, and cellular gene-based therapies.

Dr. Tampi is the Professor (Tenured) and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and the Inaugural Bhatia Family Endowed Chair in Psychiatry at Creighton University School of Medicine and Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) Health Behavioral Health Services in Omaha, Nebraska. He is also a Professor (Adjunct) of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Tampi is the inaugural Historian of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP). He is a Past President of the AAGP. Dr. Tampi was the Secretary and Treasurer of the AAGP for 2017-2018. He is also the Past President of the International Medical Graduates (IMG) Caucus at the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Tampi is a Distinguished Fellow of the APA and of the AAGP. He was a recipient of the AAGP’s ‘Clinician of the Year Award’ in 2013. In 2019, Dr. Tampi received the AAGP’s ‘Educator of the Year Award’. He received the ‘2019 Outstanding Academician of the Year Award’ given by the Indo-American Psychiatric Association (IAPA). Dr. Tampi is the recipient of the 2021 ‘Jack Weinberg Award’ for Geriatric Psychiatry given by the APA.  He was been honored with the 2022 ‘George Tarjan Award’ by the APA. Dr. Tampi received the Diversity Award from the AAGP in 2024. He has over 200 publications on various topics in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry. In addition, Dr. Tampi is the Editor of 11 books in psychiatry. Dr. Tampi used to serve as an Editor-in-Chief of the World Journal of Psychiatry. He is also a Triage Editor for International Psychogeriatrics, an Associate Editor for Drugs in Context (Psychiatry), an Associate Editor for Aging Psychiatry Section of Frontiers in Psychiatry and the Section Editor of Geriatric Psychiatry for Psychiatric Times.

Dr. Saklad is a Clinical Professor at The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and a Pharmacist at San Antonio State Hospital since 1979. He has focused his career on clinical care, teaching, and research to improve the quality of life and function in the seriously and persistently mentally ill. He helped to create a clinical research unit at San Antonio State Hospital and developed the first websites for The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP). He is the Director of the University of Texas Psychiatric Pharmacy Program in San Antonio, having trained over 70 advanced practice pharmacists in psychiatric pharmacy. Dr. Saklad is a Founding Member of CPNP, served on the CPNP Board of Directors, and was the founding senior editor of their peer-reviewed journal, the Mental Health Clinician. He has published articles and presented to many groups around the country on a variety of pharmacy and mental health-related topics. He is a principal or co-investigator for several studies of the efficacy and adverse effects of Phase II, III, and IV psychotropic agents in schizophrenia, mood disorders, and other serious mental illnesses, as well as their pharmacokinetics and interactions. He has received several honors, most recently the Judith J. Saklad Memorial Award from CPNP in 2012 and the Teaching Excellence Award from the UT College of Pharmacy in 2013.

Carla Portnoy graduated from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1982.  She has had many roles including being a member of the UT Pharmacy faculty teaching a required course on Patient Education and Counseling.  She was nominated for the TETA award (Texas Excellence Teaching Award) for every year she was there.  The last 18 years as a pharmacist was spent as a Clinical Oncology Pharmacist at Texas Oncology.  In her role, she has provided valuable insight into managing treatment side effects for cancer patients, covering topics such as fatigue, anemia, neuropathy, pain and especially nausea and vomiting. Her contributions aim to empower patients through education and improve their quality of life during treatment. She retired after 40 years and quickly made her way over to OLLI to learn some of the many things she never had time for in pharmacy school.

Daniel is a licensed paramedic and the Academic Detailer for the TEACH OUD initiative. He earned his paramedic certification from Temple College and has more than 15 years of experience in the field, including serving as the Lead Paramedic for the Williamson County Mobile Outreach Unit and the Paramedic and Medical Provider Supervisor for the newly formed Round Rock Fire Department Crisis Response Unit. Daniel responded to behavioral health crisis calls in the field in his previous roles, aiding in pre-arrest jail and emergency department diversions where possible. He also conducted follow-up visits for people who received EMS treatment for drug overdoses. During these visits, Daniel provided naloxone kits, trained patients and their loved ones on its administration, and - if wanted - helped connect them to community support and evidence-based care to reduce harm and promote positive change. Daniel is appointed to two federal committees: the SAMHSA Interdepartmental Substance Use Disorders Coordinating Committee (ISUDCC) and the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic. Daniel is also the 2023 recipient of the Ulysses “Mac” McLester Champion of Recovery Award by Communities for Recovery. He provides professional presentations and training on local, regional, and national levels but prefers and enjoys teaching. Before venturing into the medical field, Daniel worked as a musician and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of North Texas. He lives with his wife, son, and two cats in Austin, TX, and his favorite food is spaghetti.
