29th Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy Update 2017 • Pharmacist (for CPE credit)


The University of Texas College of Pharmacy welcomes you to the 29th Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy Update CE event, in Austin, Texas on October 19 and 20, 2017. The Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy Update traditionally provides 15 hours of CEUs on current trends in mental illness treatment for pharmacists, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, advance practice nurses, counselors, social workers, and physician assistants.

Requirements for CE Credit

The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  This two-day activity is approved for 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours) of continuing education credit.  In order to receive 15 contact hours of CE credit, the participant must attend/participate in all sessions of the program, return their completed Record of Attendance Form at the conclusion of the program, and return to this website to complete the online evaluation.
 
MUST COMPLETE CPE EVALUATIONS BY DECEMBER 18, 2017, OR FORFEIT CPE CREDIT
As of May 1, 2014, ACPE has placed a strict limit of 60 days to complete the CPE requirements for credit for all pharmacy continuing education programs.  
Pharmacists who fail to complete the requirements for credit for this program will forfit CPE credit for this activity.   Per rule set by ACPE, The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy will not be able to process credit after the 60 day deadline, and will not be able to route credits to the NABP eProfiles. 
This includes error caused by incorrect NABP#'s and/or Date of Birth on you profile. Please ensure your information is correct and up-to-date prior to completing the evaluations.  It is up to the conference attendee to ensure their credits have been received.

Activity Abstract: Evidence to support pharmacologic treatment of impulse control in children and adolescents is rooted in the primary diagnosis.  While impulsivity can present in numerous mental health disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) specifically list impulsivity in its diagnostic criteria, and other mental health diagnoses such as bipolar disorder (BD), disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) contain key diagnostic features that are closely related to impulsivity.  It is important for pharmacists to understand the differential diagnosis process for impulse control disorders in youth as the treatment for the impulse control can vary widely based on the primary diagnosis.  This program will aim to educate the audience on those differential diagnoses and the recommended treatments for impulsivity in children based on their primary mental health disorder.

Objectives

  • • Differentiate between the varying presentations of impulsivity in youth with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder (BD), disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
  • Describe evidence-based treatment options for impulsivity based on the primary mental health diagnosis
  • • Discuss specific patient cases and recommend appropriate treatment for the presenting impulse control disorder.

Description
When media reports of yet another horrifying multi-casualty shooting fill the national news, outraged calls to “fix the mental health system” tend to collide in the public square with proposals to expand and enforce gun laws. Developing public policy solutions to significantly reduce firearm-related violence and suicide is especially challenging in the U.S.—a multi-jurisdictional nation where private ownership of handguns is highly prevalent, culturally entrenched, and constitutionally protected; where violent acts are associated with multiple non-specific risk factors, making them difficult to predict at the individual level; and where public mental health services systems tend to be fragmented and under-resourced. This lecture will describe firearm-related violence and suicide in America as a major population health problem at the intersection of crime and mental illness, and as complex puzzle for public policy and practice. The lecture takes a public-health-law perspective in seeking practical, evidence-based solutions that balance risk and rights. The presentation will highlight one promising ‘puzzle piece’ in particular—an innovative type of state law that uses a civil court order to preemptively remove firearms from persons who are deemed to pose a significant risk of harming others or themselves. Importantly, the new laws are designed to appropriately balance public safety concerns with the right to possess a gun—without stigmatizing people with mental illness or criminalizing the respondent—and using a process that may enable the person to obtain necessary treatment and support. New research evidence will be presented on the implementation and effectiveness of these laws, especially in preventing gun suicides.
