About
The 2023 Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy Update offers 21 hours of CPE content. Registration includes Texas State Board of Pharmacy CE requirements, clinical updates, law updates and more. This program is now available fully on demand for homestudy credit.

Target Audience
This seminar is intended for pharmacists, psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, psychologists and social workers* who specialize in or have an interest in neuropsychiatric disorders and wish to enhance their awareness and knowledge of the most recent advances impacting contemporary practice.

Please feel free to register for the entire conference if you wish to participate in the non-accredited sessions for your own professional development.

In addition to the live sessions, there will be additional on-demand content included with registration. About the Speaker 
 
Tawny Smith, Pharm.D., BCPP
Associate Professor of Psychiatry
The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School
 
After graduating with her Pharm.D. degree, Dr. Smith completed a psychiatric pharmacy residency and clinical sciences fellowship in mental health outcomes at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. She is a board-certified psychiatric pharmacist currently serving as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences for The University of Texas at Austin (UT), Dell Medical School. She also maintains an adjunct faculty appointment with the UT College of Pharmacy. She has outpatient practices at UT Health Austin Women's Reproductive Mental Health and Bipolar clinics and serves as a consultant for the Perinatal Psychiatry Access Network (PeriPAN). She is also the director of the psychopharmacology consult service at Ascension Seton Shoal Creek. She serves as one of the core faculty for the DMS psychiatry residency program where she has been awarded several teaching awards. She has delivered numerous educational presentations to the community and other health professionals at national and international conferences throughout her career. She has over 85 published abstracts, peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the area of psychiatric pharmacy. She is an active member of the American Association for Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP) and is currently the chair for the Continuing Professional Development committee. She remains active in her community and serves on the Board of Directors for both the Austin Clubhouse, as well as the Hill Country chapter of the National Charity League.

Marisa S.P. Toups, M.D.

Dr. Toups is a board-certified psychiatrist and specialist in treatment-resistant depression. After medical school, she completed psychiatric training, including a specialty fellowship focusing on the study of treatment outcomes for Major Depressive Disorder, at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas TX. As a faculty member at UT Southwestern and UT Austin Dell Medical School, she studied the role of immunity in major depression, as well as served as an investigator in numerous clinical trials. She is active in teaching evidence-based medicine, is the co-author of an award-winning journal club curriculum Journal Club Super Star, and co-hosts a related podcast, the Yeah, No Journal Club. She now runs her own practice, Singularity Psychiatry and Mental Health, where she provides expert psychiatric care for patients with complex depression.

Dr. Sommi is Professor Emeritus at the UMKC School of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacy Practice, with a cross-appointment in the Department of Psychiatry in the UMKC School of Medicine and is a Pharmacy Consultant for the Missouri Department of Mental Health. He received his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Utah, Residency in Hospital Pharmacy at the University of Utah Hospital and Fellowship in Psychopharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin. He is board-certified in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties and is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
 
Throughout his career, Dr. Sommi has been a preceptor, served as Associate Dean, been a research director, served as a founding member, Past President, and on various committees of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists. He was actively involved in the establishment of Psychiatric Pharmacy as a specialty and worked to develop the recertification process for psychiatric pharmacy. Currently, he is involved with the regional Crisis Intervention Team training program in the Kansas City area and is a member of ACCP, AACP, APhA, Missouri Pharmacists Association, and the Missouri, Greater Kansas City and Mid-Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
 
Dr. Sommi’s area of research interest is primarily in outcomes associated with drug treatment of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Lindsey J. Loera graduated from the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy (UTCOP) and completed a two-year postgraduate research and teaching fellowship with the Pharmacy Addictions Research & Medicine (PhARM) Program. She is now an assistant professor of practice at the UTCOP and is the assistant director of the PhARM Program. In these roles, Dr. Loera conducts research that supports the Texas Targeted Opioid Response initiative and provides instruction in pharmacotherapy and interprofessional collaboration courses. In addition to these appointments, she serves as a faculty co-advisor to the UTCOP collegiate chapter of the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (UT-AAPP). Dr. Loera has been recognized with prestigious research awards from ACCP and AACP. She is a recipient of the 2020 UTCOP Pharmacy Mortar & Pestle Award, a 2019 United States Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Award, and the college's 2018 Benjamin Reed Leader in Pharmacy Award.

Troy A. Moore received his Pharm.D. from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy in 2003. He subsequently attended the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, receiving his Master of Science in Pharmacy in 2005 while completing a 2-year Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency at the San Antonio State Hospital and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS). He joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Department of Psychiatry, Division of Schizophrenia and Related Disorders in 2005 and became Assistant Professor in 2007. He joined the STVHCS as Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Psychiatry in 2010 where he served the Substance Abuse and Domiciliary Programs. He joined the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS) in December 2018. He is the author of numerous publications, including the Texas Medication Algorithm Project antipsychotic algorithm for schizophrenia: 2006 update and Ambulatory Detoxification in alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder and is a reviewer for multiple psychiatric, substance abuse, and pharmacy journals.
 
He is currently the Director of the ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at VA ECHCS, serves as the Co-Chair of the VHA PBM CPPO Substance Use Disorder Subject Matter Expert Workgroup, member of the CPNP Substance Use Disorders committee, and member of the VA ECHCS Research and Development Committee. Dr. Moore previously served as the Director of the ASHP-accredited PGY-2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency at STVHCS, Co-Director of the Advanced Fellowship in Addiction Treatment at STVHCS, Chair of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties Specialty Council on Psychiatric Pharmacy, the Member-at-Large on the Board of Director for the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists, and served as a handling editor for the Mental Health Clinician.

Dr. Saklad is a Clinical Professor at The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and a Pharmacist at San Antonio State Hospital since 1979. He has focused his career on clinical care, teaching, and research to improve the quality of life and function in the serious and persistently mentally ill. He helped to create a clinical research unit at San Antonio State Hospital and developed the first websites for The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP). He is the Director of the University of Texas Psychiatric Pharmacy Program in San Antonio, having trained over 70 advanced practice pharmacists in psychiatric pharmacy. Dr. Saklad is a Founding Member of CPNP, served on the CPNP Board of Directors and was the founding senior editor of their peer-reviewed journal, the Mental Health Clinician. He has published articles and presented to many groups around the country on a variety of pharmacy and mental health-related topics. He is a principal or co-investigator for several studies of the efficacy and adverse effects of Phase II, III, and IV psychotropic agents in schizophrenia, mood disorders, and other serious mental illnesses, as well as their pharmacokinetics and interactions. He has received several honors, most recently the Judith J. Saklad Memorial Award from CPNP in 2012 and the Teaching Excellence Award from the UT College of Pharmacy in 2013.

The University of Michigan
Vicki L. Ellingrod, Pharm.D., FCCP, FACNP, is the Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan and the John Gideon Searle Professor of Translational Pharmacy. She is also a professor of Psychiatry and Psychology within the Medical School and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Within the University of Michigan, she serves as associate director of the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR), and principal investigator for the KL2 program, which provides training and mentoring in translational research for health professionals and junior faculty. Both of these initiatives are competitively supported by the National Center for the Advancement of Translational Science (NCATS). She obtained her bachelor’s and PharmD from the University of Minnesota and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychopharmacology/pharmacogenetics at the University of Iowa, followed by joining the faculty there as an assistant professor. Her research has focused on the identification of genetic markers related to drug response in mental illness and has been funded by NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) the FDA, and industry. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Michigan, Dr. Ellingrod was a practicing clinical pharmacist working on the medical psychiatry unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Ellingrod is a founding member of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists and a fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP), as well as the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). She also serves as a scientific editor for Pharmacotherapy and the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science and is an editor on the textbook DiPiro’s Pharmacotherapy a Pathophysiologic Approach.

Dr. Thida Thant is a faculty psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Department of Psychiatry and is the Director of the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service and the Psychiatric Consultation for the Medically Complex clinic, and the Assistant Chief of Service for the Psychiatry Community Practices. She graduated with a BA in Plan II Honors from the University of Texas in Austin, attended the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and completed her psychiatry residency and CL fellowship at the University of Colorado. Her professional interests include cannabis in medical education and comprehensive mental health care for medically and neurologically complex patients, with a more recent focus on long-haul COVID. She has written about cannabis and psychiatric care in books such as Marijuana and Mental Health and Cannabis in Medicine and has published an AAMC MedEdPortal curriculum entitled "What You Need to Know About Cannabis: An Evidence-Based Crash Course for Mental Health Trainees" as well as a Springer publishing book titled "Cannabis in Psychiatric Practice: A Practical Guide". In her spare time, she enjoys cycling, skiing, paddleboarding and hanging out with her pups Wall-E and Reba.

Dr. Mican is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist since 2003 and has mentored over 130 pharmacy residents and student interns on rotation at the Austin State Hospital from UT Austin and Texas A&M Kingsville Colleges of Pharmacy. She received the Texas Health and Human Services Patient Care Hospital Hero Award in 2018. His research has focused on improving the pharmacotherapy of severe mental disorders and mental health outcomes research. He has over 270 publications and 210 abstracts. Dr. Saklad is a Clinical Professor at The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and a Pharmacist at San Antonio State Hospital since 1979. He has focused his career on clinical care, teaching, and research to improve the quality of life and function in the serious and persistently mentally ill. He helped to create a clinical research unit at San Antonio State Hospital and developed the first websites for The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP). He is the Director of the University of Texas Psychiatric Pharmacy Program in San Antonio, having trained over 70 advanced practice pharmacists in psychiatric pharmacy. Dr. Saklad is a Founding Member of CPNP, served on the CPNP Board of Directors and was the founding senior editor of their peer-reviewed journal, the Mental Health Clinician. He has published articles and presented to many groups around the country on a variety of pharmacy and mental health-related topics. Jason E. Schillerstrom, M.D.

Dr. Jason Schillerstrom is a Professor of Geriatric Psychiatry at UT Health San Antonio. He provides clinical care to elders with mood, anxiety, and cognitive disorders. He serves as a consultant to Adult Protective Services and local attorneys who request decisional capacity assessments for elders suffering from neglect or exploitation. Dr. Schillerstrom is the Residency Program Director for Psychiatry where he teaches and guides 78 civilian and active duty psychiatrists in training.

Human Trafficking Prevention: Pharmacy Perspective
 
This course is approved for only CPE, CME, CEU continuing education credit. The course is approved by the Texas HHSC for meeting the Human Trafficking Prevention credit for all healthcare providers.

About the Speakers 
 
Kerri Taylor, M.S., ccc-slp
Executive Director at Unbound Houston
Kerri Taylor is the Executive Director of Unbound Now Houston, the local chapter of Unbound Now, an international anti-human trafficking organization that focuses on domestic minor sex trafficking with specific emphasis on prevention efforts with at-risk youth. Unbound works to activate the community to fight human trafficking and is dedicated to public awareness, prevention education, professional training, and survivor advocacy.  Kerri serves on the board of the Brazoria County United Front Coalition to Fight Human Trafficking. In addition to being a member of the Child Sex Trafficking Advisory Council of Harris County, she works closely with the No Trafficking Zone, established in 2020 and with NRG stadium. Unbound Now Houston’s advocates are onsite at every Texans home football game, providing services for identified victims. In addition, she serves alongside other advocates in Galveston and Brazoria County as a coordinated response protocol for identified victims of human trafficking is developed. 
Kerri earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Baylor University with a specialization in Speech Pathology and Audiology and subsequently, a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the John A. Burn School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. She is retired from private practice, having served in the acute, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and home health settings specializing in neurogenic speech and swallow disorders.

Claire A. Latiolais, Pharm.D., M.S. 
Clinical Assistant Professor, Pharmacy Practice
The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy 
Dr. Claire Latiolais graduated from Purdue University with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2015. She went on to complete an ASHP-accredited Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency in The Houston Program at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. Along with this program, she completed her Master’s in Pharmacy Leadership and Administration from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. She joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy (UTCOP) in 2018 and served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Her role included serving as the Course Coordinator for the Institutional Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (I-IPPE).  Additionally, her responsibilities included teaching Drug Information, Applied Pharmacy Management, Clinical Skills and Hospital Pharmacy, as well as serving as the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) faculty advisor and Chair of the Admissions Committee. In the fall of 2022, Dr. Latiolais transitioned into a new role at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist of Drug Information and Formulary Management. In addition, Dr. Latiolais continued an appointment with UTCOP as the Experiential Regional Director for Houston. Dr. Latiolais is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) where she served on the 2019-2020 New Practitioners Forum Executive Committee, the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) where she serves on the Education Affairs Council, the Central Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CTSHP) where she served as a Board Member, Phi Lambda Sigma, Phi Delta Chi, and Rho Chi. Her interests include drug information, formulary management, experiential education, professional development of students, servant leadership, hospital operations, and pharmacy management.

Sarah Kubes, Pharm.D., BCPPS
Clinical Assistant Professor, Pharmacotherapy
The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy 
Dr. Kubes was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She graduated from Texas A&M University in 2006 with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences, then attended the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and graduated in 2011. Dr. Kubes continued her post-graduate education as a PGY1 resident at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Houston Medical Center and then a PGY2 pediatrics residency at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Following residency, she accepted a position as a Pediatric Critical Care Clinical Specialist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. In 2014, she relocated to San Antonio and took on the role of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Dr. Kubes joined the UT group in 2018 as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Pharmacotherapy Division of the College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin, as well as an Adjoint Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine and The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities within the college, Dr. Kubes is also responsible for clinical pharmacy services and caring for pediatric patients within the University Health System in San Antonio. Dr. Kubes also sits on the CTSHP board as a senior board member, has been appointed by the Texas Attorney General’s office and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission as a Texas Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Board Member, serves as the Chair for the UT-affiliated Residency Programs and vice chair for the general pediatrics special interest group for the Pediatric Pharmacy Association national organization. Her primary areas of research include quality improvement in pediatrics, cystic fibrosis and infectious diseases. Her clinical interests include pediatrics, infectious diseases and maternal health. In her spare time, she is a mom to 3 children, an avid gardener, baker, reader and chicken/turkey/pheasant/duck/quail/bunny/piggy tender.

Ashley Garling, Pharm.D.

Dr. Ashley Garling graduated Rho Chi with honors from the MCV/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy. Her career path went from community pharmacy management, inpatient pharmacy with an oncology focus, to corporate clinical coordinator, and media spokeswoman. She is now a clinical assistant professor at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy where she serves as a communication, media, and patient engagement specialist. Dr. Garling is the principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI for research projects in community pharmacy settings spanning from telehealth, HIV PrEP, mental health, patient counseling, and medication adherence.  She currently serves as president of the Capital Area Pharmacist Association, Affairs Public Policy Council Member, and Public Policy Council Member of the Texas Pharmacist Association.  Her career pillars are focused on public activation, empowerment of underheard voices, and health education. In 2020-21, Dr. Garling was awarded the Dr. Carolyn Brown DEAI Champion Award and the 2021 Teaching Excellency Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to diversity, inclusion, and pharmacy education.
